1719, from Gk. aphrodisiakos "inducing sexual desire," from aphrodisios, "pertaining to Aphrodite" (q.v.), Gk. goddess of love and beauty.

An aphrodisiac is a substance used to induce feelings of lust and love. Many have been proven to be simply placebos, but some common foods, like chocolate and apples, are potent aphrodisiacs.
