The ringing of bells or death knells for the deceased is an old custom and has long been associated with mystical occurrences and the spirit world since ancient times. Some believe that the ringing of bells at times of death originated in the practice of seeking to frighten away the evil spirits that lurk beside a corpse at funerals or to rid of any ghostly hauntings. One well known rite; where a bell was rung, a holy book was closed and a candle snuffed out was used to dismiss a spirit, mostly practiced by the roman church today.
