A Bellwether is a way-shower, and comes from the Middle English bellewether, which is a composite word referring to the bell that is tied about the neck of a wether (castrated ram) in order that it might lead its flock of sheep. This practice has led to the term being adopted to denote any entity that has an influence over, or is able to presage, future events.
