Black Magic
From Traditional Witchcraft Wiki Project
The term Black Magic has several origins which include:
- A reference to the magic that was practiced in Egypt. The use of the term black was due to the association with the rich fertile black soil of the Nile River. Later, this term subsequently became associated with alchemy.
- A reference to the magic that was practiced by the African descended slaves of the Americas.(See: Voodoo)
- A reference to magic that carries ill intent and malice. This use of the term black coincides with the same sentiment as describing someone who is in a "black" mood.
The use of the adjective black in relation to magic is often misguided as magic simply is and exists without colour. The historic uses of the term are often improperly utilized, or even considered derogatory at times, and therefore the term black magic is not used by traditional practitioners very often, or at all.
