A cist is a Neolithic or Bronze Age burial chamber made to house the bodies of the dead, and sometimes also burial goods. It was generally formed by digging out a rectangular shaped pit and lining it with large stone slabs. They are sometimes found under cairns, barrows, and so forth. The word cist is Welsh for chest, and derives from the Latin cista.
