An ex-voto is a votive offering to a god, saint or divinity. It is given in fulfilment of a vow (hence the Latin term, short for ex voto suscepto, "from the vow made") or in gratitude or devotion. Ex-votos are hung upon trees, placed at wells, springs, standing stones, cairns, churches, shrines and other places of pilgrimage where the attendant seeks to petition for aid or give libation and thanks.

Ex-votos can take a wide variety of forms, such as ribbon, thread, candles, incense, statues, pictures, coins, food, drink and so forth.
