God
From Traditional Witchcraft Wiki Project
God is a generic term for a male deity, although it was originally neutral; it became assigned to the masculine gender after the coming of Christianity. It is an Old English name deriving from the Proto Indo-European *ghut, meaning "that which is invoked". Some trace it to the Proto Indo-European *gheu, meaning "to pour a libation". This pouring of a libation is believed by some to relate to an offering to a burial mound, and so the Germanic may have originally related to a spirit within such a mound. Contrary to popular opinion, it is not related to the word "good".
