Horse Skull In Buildings

The skull of a horse is occasionally found interred in the foundations of houses, sometimes one at each of the four corners of the property, although single interments are the rule, and are more common in Wales & Ireland than England. They have also been found within walls, beneath floorboards, within attics & belfries & in chimneys. There are various explanations for this practice, but the two most common explanations are that they are warding & apotropaic, on the basis that horses, like cats, are credited with the ability to sense evil spirits, or that they are meant as a foundation sacrifice.
