The state of liminality is one being betwixt two things, partaking of both yet being of neither, and so engenders a state of ambiguity. In many ways it denotes the passage leading from one thing to another, such as the transition from life to death and back again. Such times and places are very prominent in folklore and mythology

The word liminal derives from the Latin limen, meaning "threshold".

Liminal Times

These are those times between times, such as midnight, dawn, midday and twilight, which marks the transition from day to night. These have their equivalents also in the seasons, such as the equinoxes, where day & night are poised in balance, waiting for one to give way to the other.

Liminal Places

These include those places that demark a boundary between one place and another, such as a hedge between fields, a gate, a door, a bridge spanning a river and so forth. They also include caves, the sea-shore, and hills, all of which mark an intersection between one realm and another.
