Matriarchy

The word Matriarchy derives from the Latin word mater meaning mother and the Greek word archein meaning to rule. Matriarchy is a family, society, community, or other group of people that is governed exclusively by mothers. There has never been a matriarchal culture recorded. A group that is matriarchal is notably different than a group that is matrilineal, having the line carried by the mother, and slightly different from a group govened by Gynecocracy, or rulership by women.
