Midnight
From Traditional Witchcraft Wiki Project
True Midnight, also known as the witching hour, is that point in time halfway between dusk and dawn; it is literally the middle of the night, the very apogee of darkness, and not necessarily the same thing as 12pm. The corollary of this is that true midday is halfway between dusk and dawn. Midnight is literally the ending of one day and the beginning of the next and thus liminal, it is a time between times. As such it is a time when this world and the other(s) are closer together, and when the powers of darkness hold sway, and so it is used by some witches as a time to summon spirits and the Devil, as a time to converse with those of the Other, such as the shades of the dead, a time to harvest certain accoutrements of the trade, and as a time when many witch crafts are imbued with extra potency.
In fairy lore, when the sun sets in the west, it is said to rise in the Otherworld, this world being a reflection of ours. Accordingly, our night is their day, and vice-versa; thus do the fairies and spirits of the Otherworld visit our world at night.
