A moppet is a doll used for the purposes of witchcraft (see also poppet) and comes from the Middle English moppe, meaning "little child" or "baby doll"; it was also less endearingly used as a term for a simpleton, in the same way we call a fool a child. Some suggest moppet derives from the Latin word mappa, meaning "napkin" or "tablecloth", thus suggesting a "cloth doll".
