Neolithic

The Neolithic Era (c. 4000 - 2000 B.C.), also known as the New Stone Age, is a chronological period that marks the transition when humans left behind the way of the hunter-gatherer and took up agriculture as a way of life. It is thought that the notion of farming came to England from across the Channel sometime around 4000 BC, and from there quickly took root across the British Isles in general. Agriculture meant that people needed to become more settled, and so communities were built up around cleared land, normally on high spots where the soil drained quickly, where crops could be grown and livestock kept; very few settled in the wooded valleys. In settling they took long rectangular wooden cabins for homes, although gaps in farming knowledge meant that they still had to move on every 10-20 years when the land became less productive, returning generations later when the land had became fertile again.
Their attire generally consisted of hide garments of simple design, and sometimes wore animal bone & teeth necklaces. The average life expectancy was low, men reaching ages of 35 and women 30.
