Ogham is a form of writing that is based in Latin. It utilizes varying slash marks across a horizonational line, plane, or edge. Many instances of ogham are used for simple writings such as a name. It has been suggested that the use of ogham is perhaps simlar to the modern label marker that states "This belong to <insert name here>."

The words formulated through the use of ogham are often comrpised of either names or words in the Latin language. Contrary to popular belief, ogham is predominately, and some would even state completely, used after the introduction of Catholism. Many have tried to suggest that ogham has some mystical or magical connotations, however the religio-magical traditions during that time period were oral traditions and written communication was considered to be inferior and therefore were not utilized in these traditions.

It is worth mentioning that the common use of the ogham for marking the ownership of objects was in common use in Ireland up through the 19th c. and there are instances of carts and other such items being labeled with the names of their owners using ogham.
