An Omen, or portent, is a phenomenon that is believed to foretell the future, often signifying the advent of change. Interpretation of omens and prophetic signs is a form of divination. The word omen is from the Latin for "foreboding" and derives from the Old Latin osmen, which some speculate as being cognate with the root audire, meaning "to hear".
