Poppet
From Traditional Witchcraft Wiki Project
A poppet is a doll made to represent a person, for working magic on or against that person. These dolls may be fashioned from such materials as a carved root (such as Mandrake), grain or corn shafts, a fruit, paper, wax, a potato, clay, branches, or cloth stuffed with herbs. The intention is that whatever actions are performed upon the Effigy will be transferred to the subject. This use of poppets is known as "image magic". They are also known as Poppits, Moppets, Mommets and Pippies.
The word poppet for a small doll used in witchcraft and sorcery dates from about the 13th century, and is an earlier form of the word "puppet". This Middle English word poppet originally meant a small child or doll, as in the phrase of endearment "little poppet".
