In theology, Providence, is the sovereignty, superintendence, or agency of God over events in people's lives and throughout history, and shares some affiliation with fate. The word providence comes from the Latin providentia, meaning 'foresight' or 'precaution'; it derives from two words, these being pro- meaning 'ahead' and videre meaning 'to see'. The current meaning of the word (Divine Providence) derives from the sense "knowledge of the future", which was the privilege of gods. The initial meaning of providere remains in 'to provide', i.e. "to take precautionary measures".
