Soot is the black remnants of a fire, and so has similar uses and virtue as ash. It is most commonly collected from the chimney (see also hearth).

Soot In The Flying Ointment

Soot was a common ingredient in the flying ointment, which some have suggested was to enable the witch to be unseen whilst out and about in the midnight sabbat.

Soot And Witchcraft

Soot has many uses in the witch arts. One use that some put it to is the demarking of boundaries.

When soot is combined with belladonna, water parsnip, monkshood and cinquefoil, it makes an ointment able to contact the other side. Another ointment containing soot, similar in composition to that of the flying ointment, is used for shape-shifting, and is specifically associated with lycanthropy.
