A spell is linked to the idea of an incantation or galdor; that is to say it refers specifically to a magical word formula or a set of words that have caused a magical effect. The word spell comes from the Old English word, which means "story" or "speech", from the Proto-Germanic *spellan. It was first recorded in its sense of a set of words with magical powers in 1579, and the term spellbound, as in "fastened by a spell", is attested from 1799.
