Spirit is a word deriving from the Latin spiritus, meaning "breath", but also "soul", "courage" and "vigour". It comes ultimately from a Proto Indo-European root *(s)peis-, meaning "to blow". In considering its sense of "vigour", we come to understand how the spirit enlivens a thing or makes it active (as in "he has a lot of spirit"), which alludes to a spirit as an animating and energetic principle (as in "to be spirited away"); it is a vital living principle.
