Totem is a term is of Ojibwa origin and the word references totemistic beliefs which are found within the culture of the Native Peoples that lived and continue to live in what is now called America. The term has been adopted by Anthropologists and the New Age community to refer to favorite so-called spirit animals or spirit guides. Originally, a totem was sacred to a particular group of people or tribe and held meaning for those people.

Currently the word lacks much of its original meaning and is not used within Traditional Witchcraft.
