West
From Traditional Witchcraft Wiki Project
West comes from the Proto-Germanic *wes-t-, which in turn derives from the Proto Indo-European *wes-, which is also the source of the Greek hesperos & the Latin vesper, meaning "evening" & "west". It is further suggested that this might be an enlarged form of the base *we-, meaning "to go down", and thus literaly the "direction in which the sun sets".
In the system of the airts west is associated with water, dusk and the colour grey (or dun).
